Airtel Sierra Leone has inked network upgrade deals with vendors Ericsson of Sweden and Huawei of China, local news site SL Concord Times reports. Speaking at a press conference held at the company’s Freetown headquarters, Sudipto Chowdhury, managing director of Bharti Airtel Sierra Leone, commented: ‘We are currently strengthening our network partnerships as Huawei will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the network, using a model with strong local presence to improve response times … Ericsson will continue to supply and install our new radio and transmission equipment for both 2G and 3G sites’.

Mr Chowdhury noted that Ericsson will deploy 28 new 2G base transceiver stations (BTS), with the aim of improving coverage in several areas and bringing connectivity to chiefdoms which do not have any coverage at present. In addition, the vendor will deploy a total of 127 new 3G towers, which will improve coverage in capital Freetown, as well as extending 3G technology to all district headquarters.
