MAC n jeeze: no end in sight for Poland’s 4G auction

13 Jul 2015

Poland’s Office of Electronic Communications (UKE) and the Ministry of Administration and Digitisation (MAC) are still looking for a way to conclude the long-running auction of 4G wireless spectrum. The sale of 800MHz and 2600MHz spectrum has been running since early February, with six firms bidding for 19 lots of frequencies. Total bids have now passed PLN4.457 billion (USD1.19 billion), and authorities are concerned that the sale still has no end in sight. A proposal from the MAC suggests implementing a price cap equivalent to four times the reserve price of the spectrum on offer; the 19 lots had a combined reserve price of PLN1.6 billion, meaning the cap would be set at PLN6.4 billion under the amendment.
