Saudi Arabian telco Zain has launched what it claimed to be ‘the first commercial Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) network in the world using Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz frequency bands’, in partnership with Huawei Technologies. Following the upgrade, Zain has upped its download speeds to 150Mbps, up from the previous maximum downlink of 75Mbps. Hassan Kabbani, CEO of Zain KSA, said: ‘The launch of our new LTE-A network in Saudi Arabia is another step of our commitment to offer the best and most innovative solutions to our customers … We recognise LTE-A technology as the way of future connectivity.’

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, earlier this week Zain Saudi completed a pilot project in the western part of the country to combine Frequency Division Duplex LTE (FDD-LTE) spectrum in the two aforementioned bands. The CA project was carried out in cooperation with equipment vendor Nokia Networks.
