Vodafone Portugal trials FDD/TDD LTE convergence with Ericsson, Qualcomm

Vodafone is poised to take advantage of frequency division duplex (FDD)/time division duplex (TDD) LTE network convergence and carrier aggregation (CA), starting with its network in Portugal, Ericsson has announced. The initiative, which is being carried out in conjunction with Qualcomm Technologies, will see TDD-LTE capability added to Vodafone’s already installed FDD-LTE network, resulting in significantly enhanced downlink data capacity and an improved mobile broadband experience for end-users.

The Swedish vendor notes that Vodafone’s Portuguese trial uses 15MHz of Band 3 spectrum (FDD-1800) alongside a 20MHz block of Band 38 spectrum (TDD-2600); the tests are supported by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, and simply required a software update to Ericsson baseband hardware already operating in the network.
