Cambodian mobile operator Smart Axiata is aiming to expand its 4G LTE network to parts of all 25 provinces by mid-June, in response to surging demand for mobile data services. The Phnom Penh Post cites Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt as saying that the cellco’s 4G services are currently available in all major cities, including Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap, Kampong Cham, Takhmao and Sihanoukville. Smart, which currently has around 7.5 million mobile customers, states that its 1,800 base stations provide 2G coverage to 98% of the population, with Hundt revealing that 75% of cell sites have been upgraded for 3G services and that the cellco is working to upgrade all base stations to enable 3G technology. ‘The network has to be expanded further to cater to the exponential growth in data traffic that is generated through smartphone use. Last year, our data traffic multiplied by four times,’ he stated.
