1 Jun 2015

Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) has revealed that its Long Term Evolution (LTE) user base reached 2.34 million on 28 May – the one year anniversary of its 4G launch. According to a report by local news site DigiTimes, the cellco now accounts for a little over 37% of all LTE users in Taiwan. Company president Shih Mu-piao told reporters that CHT will add around 4,500 4G base transceiver stations (BTS) to its 12,000-strong network by the end of 2015, giving it population coverage of 99%.

Going forward, Shih noted that the telco expects to fully utilise its existing 4G bandwidth within the next two years, and as such, will participate in the National Communications Commission’s (NCC’s) planned auction for 2600MHz spectrum. Chunghwa hopes to secure a 20MHz block of spectrum in the auction, which is scheduled to take place in the fourth quarter of this year.
