Ukrainian mobile operator Astelit (life:)), which earlier this month launched its 3G W-CDMA/HSPA+ network in Lviv, has announced a strategic partnership with two leading equipment providers, Huawei and Ericsson, for nationwide 3G deployment over the next three years. The cellco says it is planning to deploy ‘the best 3G network in Ukraine’, noting that it owns the 1920-1935MHz and 2110-2125MHz frequency band, ‘located in the most advantageous position in the frequency range’ (having paid a higher price at auction than its larger rivals Kyivstar and MTS). In addition, the operator notes that it was the last entrant to Ukraine’s mobile market a decade ago and therefore has built its 2.5G network using advanced equipment compatible with 3G technology upgrades. Erdal Yayla, life:) acting CEO, stressed: ‘We are glad to cooperate with the internationally known technological leaders such as Huawei and Ericsson. I am sure that thanks to their extensive international experiences in deploying 3G networks around the world and due to the expertise of [the] life:) technical team, we will reach our goal – the best 3G network in Ukraine. Moreover, we plan to use the experience of life:) parent company, Turkcell which recently became the first operator in the world that supports 3 Carrier 3G both on the network and handset side – a technology which offers download speeds of up to 63.3Mbps and, when used at this maximum capacity, reduces the download time for a 700MB video to 1 minutes and 29 seconds.’
