MICT to clear up iPSTAR status with new Thaicom contract

27 May 2015

Thailand’s Ministry of Information & Communication Technology (MICT) plans to draw up a new public-private joint venture contract with Thaicom in a bid to end any legal uncertainty surrounding the use of the iPSTAR broadband satellite, the Bangkok Post reports, citing ICT Minister Pornchai Rujiprapa. The move follows a recommendation from the Office of the Attorney General last year, which claimed that Thaicom might be violating the terms of its concession by launching iPSTAR as its main satellite, rather than as a backup for Thaicom 3. A committee comprising three members each from the MICT and Thaicom will be set up ‘soon’ to draw up a new contract to comply with the 2013 Public-Private Joint Venture Act, the minister explained.
