SIM registration ‘ineffective’ say MPs

22 May 2015

Gambian members of parliament in the Public Accounts and Public Enterprises Committees (PAC/PEC) of the National Assembly have criticised the ‘ineffective’ registration of mobile SIM cards, urging the telecoms regulator, the Public Regulatory Authority (PURA), to improve the process, the Daily Observer reports. Some MPs noted that vendors were ‘indiscriminately’ selling SIM cards in the streets and in shops without registering the user’s identity, despite the PURA beginning the SIM registration programme in 2011 with the ultimate ambition to have all SIMs registered. The watchdog indicated to the parliamentary committees that improved security measures involving several agencies were needed to make the scheme effective.
