China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), which operates under the Zong brand, plans to have 3,000 4G and 5,500 3G cell sites by the end of the year, ProPakistani writes, citing Zong CEO Liu Dianfeng. To-date the company has rolled out 500 4G sites whilst a further 3,700 were 3G-enabled. The official went on to say that Zong is investing USD300 million in its high speed mobile data networks in 2015, with a particular focus on 4G, adding that although the penetration of 4G handsets in Pakistan is currently low, it is growing fast enough that the cellco is ‘confident’ of spending heavily on a 4G rollout.
In a related development, meanwhile, Mobilink has expanded its 3G network to ten new cities bringing the total covered to 53. The most recent additions to the cellco’s 3G footprint were: Chunian, Farooqabad, Ganda Singh Wala, Gujjar Khan, Hafizabad, Harripur, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Raiwind and Talagang. The company’s head of data, Aamer Manzoor was quoted as saying: ‘Mobilink’s expansion of 3G services continues to make a major contribution to a robust ecosystem of high-speed internet which not only provides reach across major cities but also empowers customers with a well-planned coverage. Our aim is to empower customers with a quality experience of internet in the palm of their hands and bridge the digital divide between cities and towns.’
