Digi winning number porting battle

18 May 2015

Romanian quadruple-play operator RCS&RDS (Digi) gained a greater number of customers than its rivals via mobile number portability (MNP) in the first four months of 2015, according to data from telecoms regulator ANCOM obtained by business newspaper Ziarul Financiar (ZF). Digi, which is the smallest cellco by subscribers in Romania, nonetheless ported 96,572 users onto its network from rivals in January-April 2015, compared to Vodafone (46,754 incoming ports), Orange (33,060) and Telekom Romania (21,969). ZF writes that new Digi users have recently been largely attracted by low-priced smartphones; RCS&RDS offers subsidised smartphones bundled with monthly tariffs starting from just EUR2 (USD2.29) per month. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, in December 2014 RCS&RDS offered customers who port their mobile numbers to Digi three months’ free subscription if signing up for a 24-month contract; at that date ANCOM showed a recent sharp increase in the number of users porting their number to Digi.
