FairPoint Communications CEO Paul Sunu has suggested that the company is open to a possible acquisition, it has been reported. Speaking on a recent conference call, Mr Sunu admitted: ‘We must consider mergers and acquisitions, as either a seller or a buyer, as part of our overall strategy. This exploration will be done carefully and methodically.’ Rival telco Frontier Communications has been identified as the most likely suitor, following its recent acquisition of Verizon’s wireline assets in California, Texas and Florida. Meanwhile, CenturyLink and Windstream have also been named as potential buyers by industry sources.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, FairPoint Communications is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, and operates in 31 markets in 17 states, mostly in rural areas. The company is the sixth largest PSTN operator in the US by subscribers.
