I don’t like Cricket… I love it, say five million subscribers

John Stephens, the senior executive vice president and CFO of AT&T Inc, has informed investors that the company’s pre-paid Cricket brand is fast-approaching the five million subscriber mark. Fierce Wireless quotes Mr Stephens as telling the audience at the Jefferies TMT 2015 Conference: ‘Cricket is doing well. The churn is coming down. We are nearing a five million customer base and we are very proud of that.’

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in July 2013 AT&T agreed a USD1.2 billion takeover for San Diego-based regional operator Leap Wireless, which operated under the Cricket brand. Leap shareholders voted their approval of the deal in October 2013 and it was passed by the FCC and completed on 13 March 2014. In mid-May 2014 AT&T launched a new range of low-cost, pre-paid 4G plans under the well-known Cricket brand, which replaced its previous Aio Wireless pre-paid offshoot.

Prior to the takeover, Cricket’s user base dipped to 4.551 million, down from a peak of 6.192 million in March 2012.
