Two million SIMs remain unregistered ahead of August deadline

13 May 2015

According to the National Communications Agency (NCA), as at 1 May 2015 Kyrgyzstan’s three largest operators by subscriber, Megacom, Sky Mobile (operating under the Beeline banner) and Nur Telecom (‘O!’), had registered 67.66% (around 1.9 million according to TeleGeography’s figures), 80.25% (2.2 million) and 79.49% (1.5 million) of their respective SIM cards. The combined total of 5.6 million registrations to date means that the country still needs to register just under two million additional SIM cards by the previously stated 8 August deadline.

As noted by TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the NCA initially introduced legislation stating that from March 2014 all Kyrgyz SIMs were to be registered – with existing subscribers being given until end-March 2015 to complete the registration process. Due to the cellco’s collective failure to meet the deadline, the time-frame was subsequently extended by five months. Under the legislation, any SIMs not registered by this date face disconnection.
