Nar launches 4G LTE services in Baku

8 May 2015

Mobile service provider Azerfon, which operates under the Nar Mobile banner, has launched 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, according to reports from Mforum.ru. The network operates over the 1800MHz band, with Nar having deployed 130 LTE base transceiver stations (BTS) to support the rollout. Initially, services are available only to corporate customers; the operator intends to expand its 4G network to include residential subscribers and nationwide coverage, but is yet to provide a date for such a move.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Nar was awarded a licence to offer 4G LTE technology in February 2015, from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communications and High Technologies (MCHT). Meanwhile, the following month the operator increased the maximum download speeds available over its existing 3.5G mobile networks to 42.2Mbps, via the introduction of Dual Carrier (DC)-HSPA+ technology.
