T-Mobile first to launch VoLTE commercially in Czech Republic

6 May 2015

T-Mobile Czech Republic has become the first operator in the country to launch Voice-over-Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) commercially in its 4G network, allowing it to deliver standard IP-based voice calls on its LTE networks. The launch phase of VoLTE services marks the end of a pilot trial that has been running since October 2014, it said. At launch, the cellco’s new VoLTE service is only supported on the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone, but it is working to offer new models, in cooperation with a number of undisclosed manufacturers. T-Mobile says the new service will provide end users with a shorter time for call set-up, enhanced quality of call (even compared with HD Voice in 3G) and lower energy consumption per call, for a longer battery life. During the call, the cellco notes that there are no restrictions on data connections, e.g. simultaneous use of online navigation and calls when driving a car, and that when a user leaves the area of LTE coverage, the call is handed over to a 2G or 3G network (via SRVCC functionality). In addition, voice calls on the LTE network do not consume data allowances and no extra fee is charged for them.
