Filipino mobile operator Globe Telecom, majority-owned by Ayala Corporation, yesterday launched a new flat-rate unlimited data roaming service, available in more than 50 countries, and targeted at its pre-paid subscriber base. In a press briefing, the firm’s vice president for Globe Platinum and Roaming Business, Coco Domingo, said that ‘Globe Prepaid Roam Surf’ allows pay-as-you-go users to access the internet when abroad on a full 24-hour basis, making their surfing experience ‘seamless and worry-free’. Customers can choose one of three options for the new service: PHP599 (USD13.4) for 24 hours, PHP1,797 for three days, or PHP2,995 for five days. ‘With Globe Prepaid Roam Surf, pre-paid users no longer need to buy local SIMs and change numbers or search for Wi-Fi spots in their destinations just to connect to their loved ones and the things they love doing on their smartphones,’ Domingo said.
Initially available in countries such as Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the US, the UK and the rest of Europe, Globe Telecom targets 83 countries by 3Q15 and is looking to seal tie-ups with 190 telco operators in 100 countries by the end of the year. ‘We’re looking at getting more roaming partners so the coverage is more seamless,’ the official added. As of end-2014, Globe had 731 roaming partners in more than 230 roaming destinations, according to its annual report.
