Afrihost launches fixed-wireless LTE service

South African operator Afrihost, which was acquired by cellco MTN SA in November 2014, has launched fixed-wireless Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. The new solution is aimed at subscribers who ‘cannot get DSL services or cannot afford the hidden costs’, but are looking for the functionality and stability of a traditional DSL router. In order to access the service, subscribers need a router and a mobile data package. Afrihost currently offers the Huawei B593 router, which supports LTE download speeds of up to 150Mbps/50Mbps (downlink/uplink), for a promotional price of ZAR1,499 (USD122) for the first 200 subscribers (full price – ZAR1,999). The company is advertising three monthly data packages with its fixed mobile LTE service, priced at ZAR29 (500MB); ZAR145 (3GB); and ZAR397 (8GB).
