Ufone tasks Towershare with expanding FATA coverage

Ufone, the mobile arm of fixed line incumbent Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL), has enlisted the help of passive infrastructure firm Towershare Pakistan to extend coverage into the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Pro Pakistani writes that under the terms of the agreement, Towershare will build 39 new sites in the region and lease access to Ufone and other operators.

The agreement follows on the heels of a leaseback deal between Warid and Towershare earlier this month, which will see Towershare acquire more than 4,500 towers nationwide from the operator. The pact will help minimise the UAE-backed cellco’s capital and operating expenditure, without impacting coverage or service quality.

Commenting on the developments, Towershare’s president and CEO Rehan Hassan said in a statement: ‘We are committed to bring the benefits of infrastructure sharing to Pakistan. Through working with us, the operators can minimise new build CAPEX and optimise their OPEX costs whilst also providing increased and better service to their customers.’ The official went on, referring to the company’s agreement with Ufone: ‘Towershare believes strongly in the financial, operational and environmental benefits associated with sharing and expanding into difficult or otherwise unserved areas is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our capabilities, whilst benefiting the local societies deprived of the benefits of mobile communication services.’
