Eircom selects Huawei for FTTH rollout

22 Apr 2015

Fixed broadband provider Eircom has chosen Chinese equipment vendor Huawei to partner in the first phase of its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) rollout. The EUR10 million (USD10.7 million) contract will see immediate deployment of Huawei’s optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network terminal (ONT) technologies in 16 towns where Eircom’s fibre infrastructure is already in place, enabling the delivery of broadband speeds up to 1Gbps to end users. Johnny Shine, managing director at Eircom Networks commented: ‘We see customer demand for data continue to grow at a rapid pace. By deploying FTTH technology we will be in a position to meet and exceed those growing data demands and expectations with a suite of products that offers truly world class broadband speeds.’ Eircom expects subscribers to be able to order the FTTH service by the end of August 2015.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Eircom intends to launch the 1Gbps FTTH service to a total of 66 communities by 2017.
