NetOne aiming for five million subs this year

Zimbabwe’s state-owned mobile operator NetOne says it is hoping to achieve revenues of USD200 million in 2015 as it aims to boost its subscriber total to five million by year-end, up from 3.3 million at the end of March. The firm’s managing director, Reward Kangai, told local newspaper The Herald that it has begun deploying 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) equipment utilising spectrum in the 700MHz band, which was vacated by the transition from analogue to digital TV broadcasting. The NetOne chief said the new band will allow the cellco to widen its network coverage, with 700MHz frequencies able to create a wider footprint at each mobile base station than the currently used 900MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands.
