South Korea’s smallest cellco by subscribers, LG Uplus, has launched what it claims is the world’s first voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) roaming service in partnership with Japanese mobile network operator KDDI. According to the Korea Herald, the service will allow LG Uplus and KDDI subscribers to make high-definition voice and video calls over the company’s respective 4G networks. Commenting on the development, an unnamed LG Uplus official noted: ‘The successful launch of VoLTE roaming services now allows LG Uplus subscribers to use these services while roaming abroad and will help the firm gain great momentum in developing next-generation roaming services.’
