Tanzanian telcos expected to list on DSE by end-2015

9 Apr 2015

Tanzania’s telecoms operators are expected to be listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) by the end of the year, Dow Jones Newswires reports, citing January Makamba, the country’s deputy minister for communication, science and technology. Under the terms set out by the Electronic and Postal Communications Act of 2010, network operators were obliged to float their shares on the DSE within three years of it entering the statute, although the deadline was missed.

Makamba commented: ‘The law directs us to create regulations that provide for minimum shareholding requirement and listing arrangements … We are past the deadline. We can’t continue to haggle forever … At some point in the near future we will make a determination that the discussions that have taken place over the past year are sufficient.’ Makamba went on to note that the country’s major players have questioned the ‘efficacy’ of the proposed listing, and continue to drag their heels.
