Telefonica’s local mobile unit Movistar Ecuador plans to invest USD150 million to deploy its 4G LTE network and additional 3G infrastructure following its recent mobile broadband frequency licence win, according to Signals Telecom. Movistar is vying with rival Claro Ecuador to be the first to compete in the 4G market with the country’s current sole LTE provider, state-owned CNT, after the private sector pair obtained extra mobile spectrum including 1900MHz band frequencies via lengthy negotiations with the government.
