State-backed fixed line incumbent Uzbektelecom, which offers wireless services as Uzmobile, is set to launch GSM services in Tashkent on 10 April, UzDaily writes. The launch is part of a programme to modernise the operator’s mobile services, including the deployment of a nationwide GSM network by the end of 2017 and the introduction of 3G and 4G services. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Uzmobile had initially planned to activate its new GSM network by the end of 2014, but it was forced to postpone the launch after an equipment tender announced in July that year fell through, with none of the submitted proposals complying with the terms of the tender.
