PLDT to spend USD587m on wireless this year

8 Apr 2015

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) has set aside CAPEX of PHP26 billion (USD587 million) this year to build out coverage of its mobile networks, to maximise the capacity of its infrastructure and expand 3G and 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) capability, including developing its backhaul and wireless broadband networks to enhance data transmission capabilities. The Philippine Star notes that the sizeable capital expenditure programme comes at a time when PLDT – which offers cellular services through its Smart Communications and Sun Cellular units – is facing a slowdown in revenue contribution from mobile, due to saturation in the voice calls market and competition from rivals. PLDT’s 2015 wireless CAPEX target comprises 66.7% of the group total PHP39 billion set aside for fiscal 2015. The balance will be committed in the main to improving the group’s fixed line and broadband and IP infrastructure, including expanding the transmission network, increasing international bandwidth capacity, and for ongoing network maintenance.
