Mattel applies to renew 2G and 3G licences

8 Apr 2015

Mauritanian mobile operator Mattel (Mauritano-Tunisienne de Telecommunication), 51% owned by Tunisie Telecom (TT) of Tunisia, is looking to renew its licences for 2G and 3G services, Agence Ecofin reports. Orange Group of France made a EUR50 million (USD56 million) bid for TT’s stake in February this year, but that offer expired on 31 March without a deal being agreed; TT is thought to value its stake in Mattel at closer to EUR75 million, though Orange has said it will not go above its original valuation. Tunisia’s ICT minister Noomen Fehri recently visited Mauritania to discuss closer cooperation between the two countries in the telecoms sector. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Mattel sits third in Mauritania’s mobile market in subscriber terms, behind market leader Mauritel and Sudanese-owned operator Chinguitel.
