DTAC repurposing 1800MHz spectrum for 4G to help boost subscriber base

Thai cellco Digital Total Access Communication (DTAC), part of the Telenor group, is allocating 2×10MHz of existing GSM 1800MHz radio spectrum for 4G LTE services which it currently operates with 2×5MHz in the 2100MHz band, as it aims to boost its 4G subscriber base to 2.5 million by the end of the year, from around 970,000 currently, reports The Nation quoting the firm’s new CEO Lars-Ake Norling. DTAC currently uses all 2×25MHz of its available 1800MHz bandwidth for 2G services. DTAC has rolled out 4G in Bangkok and more than 40 other cities across the country, via 3,000 LTE 2100MHz base stations. 1.75 million of its subscribers have 4G-capable smartphones.
