NBN Co updates national construction plan

NBN Co, the company overseeing the construction of Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) has announced that an additional 550,000 premises have been added to the rollout schedule. In issuing a quarterly construction update which includes work already underway or planned to begin before the quarter ending September 2016, the company revealed that it now aims to cover more than 3.1 million Australian homes and businesses. Communities added to the plan include: Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast; Mt Gambier and Whyalla in South Australia; Bendigo and Docklands in Victoria; Bathurst in the NSW Central West and Castle Hill in Sydney’s North West; the township of Broome and the Perth suburbs of Hilton and Bassendean in Western Australia.

Commenting on the decision to expand the scope of the rollout, NBN Co CEO Bill Morrow said: ‘The addition of 550,000 homes and businesses to the construction schedule demonstrates the continuing momentum of the nationwide delivery of fast broadband … These quarterly forecasts enable our customers, the telephone and internet service providers, to start planning for the delivery of broadband services to these communities.’
