Verizon selects Ciena, Cisco for 100G metro overhaul

25 Mar 2015

Verizon Communications has confirmed that it intends to modernise its metropolitan optical network using scalable, packet-optimised transport solutions from vendors Ciena and Cisco. Verizon will test and deploy Ciena’s metro-optimised 6500 packet optical technology and the Cisco Network Convergence System on portions of its 100Gbps metro network this year, with plans to introduce live traffic in 2016. This new architecture is expected to give Verizon the same advantages in its metro network that it has seen in its 100G long-haul network, including increased capacity, superior latency and improved scalability. Supplier volumes will be guided by ongoing testing, support and performance, Verizon notes.
