Idea launches 3G on 900MHz band in Delhi

25 Mar 2015

Idea Cellular, India’s third largest cellco by subscribers, has launched 3G services in Delhi using frequencies in the 900MHz band that it was awarded in February last year, the Economic Times writes. With the activation of the new platform, Delhi becomes the twelfth operating area and the first metro circle in which Idea offers 3G services over its own infrastructure: the cellco has previously offered high speed data services in the metro circles via roaming agreements with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India.

Commenting on the development, Idea’s deputy manager director, Ambrish Jain said: ‘Innovation and efficiency in operations are the key drivers to Idea’s fast-paced growth… and the launch of 3G on [the] 900MHz spectrum band in Delhi is a testimony to this.’ COO Sanjeev Govil, meanwhile, referred to the propagation characteristics of the 900MHz band, which provides better indoor connectivity than the current 2100MHz range, noting that: ‘The existing 3G users will experience enhanced services and products and offerings, while the new subscribers will benefit from our affordable 3G tariffs and superior network.’
