Tele2 Croatia has inked an equipment contract with Chinese vendor Huawei for the expansion of 3G technology to all its mobile sites, while new sites will also be added to improve population coverage. Huawei will deploy its Single-RAN wireless network solution, which allows for the future upgrade to 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Tele2 is the smallest of Croatia’s three mobile operators, with around 17% of all subscribers at the end of 2014, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
Niklas Sonkin, executive vice president for Central Europe and Eurasia at the Sweden-based parent company Tele2 AB, commented: ‘In December, Tele2 Croatia secured an additional 15MHz of spectrum in the 1800MHz band. The announced investment into new 3G technology comes as a natural next step and will bring our customers substantial improvements in terms of coverage and network quality. This at a time when the smartphone penetration and data usage in Croatia is set to grow significantly.’
