SWAN about: new cellco eligible for national roaming

18 Mar 2015

Slovakia’s recently launched 4G mobile provider SWAN has been officially confirmed as having surpassed the required 20% population coverage target with its own 1800MHz infrastructure, meaning it is now able to discuss terms on national roaming with rival operators. Telecoms watchdog the Office for Regulation of Electronic Communications & Postal Services (Regulacny Urad – RU) said the decision was based on data supplied by SWAN in mid-December, while the telco stated at its commercial launch on 13 March 2015 that its network now passed over 30% of the population.

Rival cellcos O2 Slovakia, Orange Slovakia and Slovak Telekom have been reluctant to discuss national roaming with the new entrant until it was confirmed that it had met the required coverage target. At launch SWAN is offering ‘unlimited’ LTE-based mobile internet services in around 50 cities under the banner ‘4G Internet v1.0’, without commitment or contract, for a monthly fee of EUR5 (USD5.30) including VAT until 31 December 2015.
