Wind and 3 Italia inching closer to merger agreement

11 Mar 2015

Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa and Russian-owned group Vimpelcom are moving closer to an agreement on the merger of their Italian operations, 3 Italia and Wind Telecomunicazioni. According to a report from the Financial Times, which cites two people ‘close to the discussions’, Hutchison is likely to take a slightly larger share of the combined entity – thought to be 51% – in return for assuming Wind’s debts. Talks have been ongoing for over a year, with the two sides unable to agree on the ownership of the merged firm and the exact pricing of the deal.

The combined businesses had 2013 revenues of EUR6.7 billion (USD7.6 billion) and serve around 31 million customers, which would see the merged cellco take pole position in the Italian wireless sector, just ahead of current market leader Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) and second-placed Vodafone Italy.
