Nokia Networks has confirmed that it has been awarded a technology evolution contract by iWireless, a regional wireless provider that serves Iowa, eastern Nebraska and western Illinois. As such, Nokia will modernise iWireless’ existing 2G and 3G network and deploy end-to-end Long Term Evolution (LTE) infrastructure. Nokia is currently the sole supplier of iWireless’ end-to-end radio and core solution for its 2G and 3G network; the new contract maintains Nokia’s exclusive position for all of the cellco’s network elements.
Headquartered in Urbandale, Iowa, iWireless is a partnership between mobile giant T-Mobile US and Iowa Network Services (INS). The latter is privately owned by a group of 127 independent telephone companies that together serve 500,000 rural Iowans.
