PLDT claims leading position in the Philippines’ post-paid mobile market

9 Mar 2015

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT), which offers mobile services through wireless units Smart Communications and Sun Cellular, is claiming a dominant position in the country’s post-paid segment. In an e-mailed statement today, PLDT said it increased its post-pay user base by 16% last year to 2.8 million, claiming to control 55% of that segment at the same date. With revenues from post-paid users climbing 14% year-on-year to PHP21.7 billion (USD490.9 million) in FY2014, PLDT says contract users contributed 21% of total cellular revenue last year – despite the fact that its overall mobile base stood at 69.9 million at end-2014. Success in 2014 was fuelled ,it says, by the launch of a number of new products, smartphones and content offerings. Charles A Lim, executive vice president and head of the wireless consumer division at Smart and Sun, said: ‘The year 2014 presented us with opportunities to shape the mobile lifestyles of Filipinos. By introducing our subscribers to an “always-on” mobile data experience, and by giving them more ways to access information and content, we are able to build habit and spur usage among our subscribers, and to translate this to sustained revenue streams for the post-paid businesses of Smart and Sun.’

TeleGeography notes that PLDT’s main rival Globe Telecom had 2.3 million contract mobile users at the start of this year.
