DOCOMO’s ‘green’ base station delivers >90% savings with dual-power control

Japan’s NTT DOCOMO has successfully tested a new environmentally friendly base station equipped with a dual-power source technology, which it claims will save 95% for solar and off-peak usage and provide reduced (on-peak) electricity consumption of more than 90%. The cellco confirmed it had verified its prototype green base station was indeed making these savings as measured by the power consumption of the base station power source control system. NTT DOCOMO is currently trialling no fewer than ten such prototypes in field-testing and plans to commercialise eleven green base stations nationwide by the end of March.
