Cosmote Greece rolls out 300Mbps LTE-A in Athens and Thessaloniki

3 Mar 2015

OTE’s Greek mobile unit Cosmote has commercially launched 300Mbps-capable Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) technology on its network in selected regions of Athens and Thessaloniki. As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Cosmote Greece piloted LTE-A technology in November last year following its acquisition of frequencies in the 800MHz and 2600MHz spectrums (which became valid for commercial use in February 2015). According to a press release from the cellco, it is ‘making full use of the spectrum at its disposal’ and will soon bring LTE-A to ‘even more areas of the country’ under the ‘4G+’ banner. Cosmote claims that it has launched ‘the country’s first’ commercial 300Mbps data speeds, although last week rival Vodafone Greece claimed a very similar ‘Greek first’ with the launch of its commercial LTE-A network supporting 300Mbps/50Mbps download/upload, and it could be that the two cellcos have launched their respective networks near-simultaneously.
