No also-RANs: HKT, Huawei demonstrate an LTE-A first

2 Mar 2015

China’s Huawei Technologies and Hong Kong telco HKT, a division of PCCW, will demonstrate the first IP radio access network (IP RAN)-based inter-site carrier aggregation (CA) for an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week. The trial will use an inter-site CA system from Huawei based on IP RAN backhaul, designed to fill in CA coverage gaps. HKT’s director of engineering Peter Lam said that the solution ‘relieves the restriction of co-site requirement of carrier aggregation.’ HKT, which via mobile unit CSL launched LTE-A in the 1800MHz/2600MHz spectrum bands with 300Mbps peak theoretical data speed in Hong Kong in December, scheduled a third of its 4G network to be LTE-A-ready this quarter.
