Algerie Telecom to offer nationwide fibre coverage by end-2015

23 Feb 2015

Zohra Derdouri, Algeria’s Minister of Posts, IT and Communications, has announced that the country will be entirely covered with fibre-optic infrastructure by the end of 2015, the Algerie Presse Service (APS) reports. ‘Almost all of the municipalities in the country are already connected to the fibre network and those remaining will be [connected] later this year’, the official was cited as saying.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, by mid-2014 (latest available data) state-owned Algerie Telecom boasted a fibre-optic transport network spanning 57,000km, with plans to deploy additional 20,000km worth of cabling by the end of 2015. Until the deployment project is completed, the company is providing high-speed broadband access using its fixed-wireless 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, which is available in all of the country’s 48 administrative centres.
