Topway enlists Ruckus for city-wide Wi-Fi network; China Mobile, Baidu partner on cloud computing centre

Global Wi-Fi firm Ruckus Wireless has partnered with cableco Shenzhen Topway Video Communication to build and deploy a Smart Wi-Fi Municipal Area Network (MAN) across Shenzhen. The deployment is part of an ongoing project to develop ‘Smart Cities’ in China, using the latest communications technologies to improve services for residents and visitors. Topway Video is deploying Ruckus’ ZoneFlex indoor and outdoor Smart Wi-Fi access points in shops and restaurants as well as hospitals, bus and train stations and other internal and external public areas throughout the city. The cableco is also using the US-based vendor’s SmartCell Insight intelligent analysis platform, whilst its SmartCell Gateway 200 WLAN controller will integrate Topway’s Wi-Fi traffic into cellular operators’ core networks. Topway Video claims to be the largest broadband and multimedia content provider in Shenzhen, with 1.117 million cable TV subscribers, 470,000 high definition (HD) interactive TV users and 217,600 cable broadband customers at mid-2014.

Elsewhere, China Mobile has signed an agreement with web giant Baidu to jointly build a next-generation cloud computing centre targeting mobile internet businesses. China Tech News writes that the centre will have an area of 38,000 square metres, housing more than 40,000 servers and will use green energy saving designs to have the highest density and lowest power consumption in the country. The centre is expected to begin operation by early 2016 and will add to China Mobile’s existing cloud computing centres in Beijing and Guangzhou and those still under construction in Harbin, Guizhou and Suzhou.
