TTCL to offer 4G connectivity by July 2015

6 Feb 2015

Tanzania Telecommunications Company Ltd (TTCL) is set to start offering 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile services to end-users by July 2015, according to AllAfrica, which cites Peter Ngota, the company’s head of sales and marketing. Ngota said that in the past TTCL’s small mobile division ‘concentrated on corporate customers’, but the operator now intends to target residential customers across the country. The telco will use satellites to boost its wireless signal in areas where connectivity is weak.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, last week saw TTCL sign a contract with Huawei Technologies under which the Chinese vendor will upgrade TTCL’s 2G and 3G networks as well as deploying 4G technology; the first phase of that project is expected to be completed by end-June 2015.
