Movilmax enters Peruvian broadband market

Venezuelan-backed internet service provider (ISP) Movilmax has launched in Peru, company president Dick Abanto has announced. According to ElComercio.pe, the 2.5GHz WiMAX network has gone live in San Isidro, Miraflores and Surco (all Lima province) following investment of USD1.5 million. Going forward, the company plans to augment its infrastructure with the USD5 million deployment of a fibre-optic backbone linking Lima Metropolitana and Trujillo and Chiclayo in northern Peru. Going forward, the article names Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador as potential target markets.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Movilmax Venezuela operates a network of 64 WiMAX base stations covering around 50% of metropolitan Caracas, which it launched commercially in July 2007 using a 48MHz spectrum allocation in the 2.5GHz band.
