Lonestar Cell dismisses accusation of ‘illegal’ Cote d’Ivoire telecom link

4 Feb 2015

MTN Liberia (Lonestar Cell) has dismissed a ‘leaked’ Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) report which suggests that it is illegally receiving broadband data capacity from Cote d’Ivoire. The cellco, part of MTN Group, has emphatically denied the accusation which relates to a supposed re-commissioning of a telecommunications dish located in Toe Town, Grand Gedeh County. In a press release, Monrovia-based Lonestar Cell acknowledged that while the terms of its International Gateway Licence afford it rights to establish satellite and other links with international carriers and networks, it has not yet done so. The LTA issued it with the gateway licence and the operator says it has written to the regulator to inform it of its intent to reconnect the previously decommissioned dish.
