28 Jan 2015

Indian cellco Idea Cellular has booked gross revenues of INR80.15 billion (USD1.3 billion) for Q3 FY2015, ended 31 December 2014, up 21.2% year-on-year and 5.9% quarter-on-quarter. Lifted by its booming mobile data business, Idea’s post-tax profit was up 70.4% against Q3 2014 at INR6.78 billion, although this represents a slight decrease from the previous quarter, after the cellco registered a 28.0% q-o-q increase in depreciation and amortisation costs. EBITDA for the three-month period was INR24.86 billion (+37.3% y-o-y), with an EBITDA margin of 31.0% (up 3.6 percentage points y-o-y).

In operational terms, Idea claimed 150.5 million mobile subscribers at the end of December 2014, compared to 143.6 million three months earlier and 128.7 million at end-2013. Its 3G user base, meanwhile, has nearly doubled over the last twelve months, expanding from 8.7 million to 16.1 million. Indeed, the growth of data subscribers has been crucial for Idea, with data ARPU (including both 2G and 3G users) expanding to INR126 from INR91 a year ago whilst voice ARPU slid from a recent peak of INR149 in Q1 FY 2015 to INR138.
