3G expansion plans still tentative at cash-strapped Gamcel

Bai Mattarr Drammeh, vice-chair of the board of directors at state-backed mobile operator Gamcel, a subsidiary of Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel), has disclosed that the 3G service rolled out in 2013 has so far only been expanded across the Greater Banjul Area and Kanilai, although he noted that there are plans to roll out the technology to ‘all the major towns and villages of the country.’ However, as reported by Gambian newspaper The Point, the vice-chairman said this plan would require a ‘massive’ capital outlay, as Gamcel continues to face challenges in its network expansion programme. A significant capital injection is still required to enable the cellco to achieve its expansion initiatives, he admitted, adding that there is a need for strategic capital investment to ensure Gamtel and Gamcel maintain competitiveness in the Gambian telecoms market.
