TelOne acts to prevent cable theft

Zimbabwe’s state-run fixed telephony operator TelOne has said it has begun installing alarm systems on its telecoms infrastructure to combat the growing problem of cable theft and vandalism. A statement from the company noted: ‘This development means that any act of theft or vandalism will be automatically detected and trigger the alarms which will be responded to by our reaction teams.’ TelOne said that the introduction of alarm systems had already led to increased numbers of arrests. A report from the Zimbabwe Daily quotes TelOne as saying that it intends to cover most of its routes in the country. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, TelOne has around 300,000 fixed line customers.
