Pay-TV market expanded 6.1% to RUB57bn in 2014, report says

According to a report published by TMT Consulting, the Russian pay-TV market grew by 6.1% last year to RUB57 billion (USD873.4 million), fuelled by an 8.3% year-on-year increase in subscriptions to reach 37.8 million households – a penetration rate of 68%. The report confirms that the five largest pay-TV operators in Russia last year were Tricolor TV, Rostelecom, MobileTelesystems (MTS), ER-Telecom (branded Dom.ru) and Orion Express. Additionally, in the lucrative Moscow regional market, the consultancy found that the top five included Rostelecom, AKADO Telecom, Tricolor TV, MTS and Vimpelcom (Beeline).

In particular, TMT Consulting noted the rapid growth of Orion Express federation-wide, and MTS’s strong expansion in Moscow. The former increased its base by 33% last year to 2.58 million – compared to average growth of >10% for other operators – while MTS has reportedly also expanded its base by 9% to 2.80 million users. Market leader Rostelecom is continuing to increase the number of IPTV subscribers on the back of its GPON network build-out.

The pay-TV market in Russia is forecast to grow by 4.2% to RUB59.4 billion in 2015, pushing penetration of services up to over 70%.
