Vodacom, Jubilee Insurance sign M-Pesa deal

9 Jan 2015

Vodafone’s Tanzanian arm has partnered with Jubilee Insurance Company Tanzania to make medical services more accessible to those in the low-income bracket, according to a press release from the operator. Subscribers to BimaAFYA, Jubilee’s ‘affordable and comprehensive’ health insurance product, can now pay for their cover using Vodacom’s M-Pesa mobile money service, enabling access to medical care in over 150 hospitals across the country without patients having to carry cash. Vodacom’s head of marketing Kelvin Twissa said: ‘The high cost of medical insurance packages currently in the market … favours corporate staff… BimaAFYA will therefore enable many Tanzanians to enrol in a medical insurance service, equivalent to what M-Pesa is to the financial services [sector].’
