Ukko Networks demos TDD LTE-A in Helsinki

9 Jan 2015

Finland’s Ukko Networks has announced the successful completion of a Time Division Duplex (TDD) LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) demonstration at its Helsinki lab using spectrum in the 2.6GHz band. According to a press release regarding the development issued by Ukko’s strategic partner Huawei, the demonstration saw a peak throughput of 507Mbps with a 2×20MHz carrier aggregation, as well as several application services such as a video surveillance solution, which will reportedly develop the enterprise market using the TDD spectrum.

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, last month mobile data operator Ukko switched on what it claimed was the world’s first commercial LTE-450 network. With the infrastructure rollout having been carried out in collaboration Huawei, from launch the new network was said to cover more than 99% of the Finnish population, with the Chinese vendor having provided end-to-end LTE 450MHz network solutions, which not only facilitated the smooth migration of CDMA 450MHz to LTE 450MHz, but also reused legacy network resources like base stations, sites, power, and antennas, helping to decrease the operator’s network investments.

Commenting on the latest development, Antti Pellinen, Ukko Networks’ chief executive, said: ‘Ukko Networks is clearly in a great position in the Finnish mobile market landscape, especially from a frequency resources point of view. After launching the best coverage network using LTE 450MHz technology, we will launch the LTE TDD 2.6GHz network, which aims to be the fastest network in Europe. It gives us high capacity and new added-value for this frequency in the use of mobile data.’
